Frequently Asked Questions

Q : What type of visa do I need to retire in Thailand?

Click for, Criteria for retirement visas.

Q : What is the climate in Chiang Mai?

A : Chiang Mai has the most pleasant of Thai climate, with mountains to the east, north and west that protect us from extremes of heat and rains. Summer high temps are normally 5oC lower that other area's, humidity is lower and most rain falls at night.

In addition to all tropical flowers, fruit, roses, strawberries, apples and plums grow on the mountain slopes.

Q : What food is available?

A : Golden Cupids Water Garden restaurant is famous for it's quality and variety of dishes. Our European dishes range from, fish and chips to roast turkey or boiled ox tongue. Our Thai dishes from simple rice and noodle meals to our famous Thai banquet dinners. Our menu also includes a wide range of vegetarian dishes. A comprehensive drinks list is available at reasonable prices.

Q : What shops are available ?

A : Within 10 mins walking distance we have a large university village comprising 4 banks, a small supermarket, opticians, wet market, about 50 small shops and services. There are also about 20 small Thai restaurants. The city is a 20 min. bus or taxi ride providing every possible service, and entertainment.

Q : What medical service is available?

A : Thai hospitals and dental practices are privately owned, professionally run and equipped to a very high standard, with no waiting time for admittance for minor or majour operations. Costs are a fraction of Europe's inferior service. Many Europeans visit regularly for dental and medical attention. Golden Cupids staff can advise on the very best sources of attention.

Q : Will my medical insurance cover me in Thailand?

A : You should check with your company as some claim they only pay expenses incurred in Europe. If you are still paying into a private scheme it is usually beneficial to move your policy to Thailand.

Q : What can we do in Thailand?

A : Just about anything you would at home, plus a host of new experiences and interests. For those with computer skills, the hotel is wireless. The gardens are always attractive, swimming is free and massage very affordable. The hotel can advise on dozens of tours and interests.

Some of our regular guests become interested in our charity work.

Q : How would we travel around?

A : There are many ways of traveling. Local buses from village to city are amazingly cheap 15 baht per person, taxi with English speaking driver currently £ 4.75 or £ 28 for a full 8 hour engagement. Cars and motorcycles can be hired by the day or for longer periods.

Bicycles can be borrowed F.O.C. from the hotel (when available) or purchased new from about £ 20 each.

Q : What clothes do I need?

A : Ladies - normal summer clothes and perhaps a cardigan or shawl for cool evenings and mountain visits. An umbrella for sun or occasional rain. Long sleeves and skirts for temple visits.

Men - cotton shirts, shorts, sandals, long trousers (for dinner) and cardigan for cool evenings. Most do not need formal wear, but safari or dark business suits are acceptable, for any ceremonial occasion.

Q : Won't I feel cut off from family and friends?

A : Most people worry about this, but in practice, find they are visited more often and longer than before. We offer special discounted terms for your visitors.

Q : How do you offer the service so cheaply - does it mean the retirement package is a lower standard?

A : No, retirees receive our normal service and accommodation is the same as that advertised in our brochure and website. In fact you probably receive superior treatment, as when we know your little fads and fancies (within reason) we can cater for you. Financially, we save on advertising costs, which we pass on to you.

Q : Do we have to pay 12 months in advance?

A : No, you pay 25% of the annual rate at the time of booking and monthly (8.33% of annual charge) for the following 9 months. No payment for the last 3 months.

Q : What if we want to cancel during the first year contract period?

A : The three month deposit is forfeit at any time of cancellation during the contract period.

Q : What if we wish to extend the contract after the first year?

A : We give you the option to renew the contract on terms not to exceed an annual increase of 7%

Q : Can we stay at Golden Cupids for a trial period before making a commitment?

A : Yes, subject to availability Golden Cupids will accept a minimum booking of 7 days at our usual rates. When you later enter into a one year contract, we will credit you the difference between the usual and retirement rates for the trial period, e.g. if you decided on a 3 month trial period we would credit you with the difference in rates for the whole period.
